Late last year, Toyota announced ambitious electrification plans for its lineup and featured a cornucopia of sleek looking concept cars ranging from a low-slung Lexus Supercar to a Butch Toyota Tacoma-like pickup truck and an angular Toyota Cruiser sports car.

One of our favorites was the Compact Cruiser EV, a miniature off-roader reminiscent of a boxy styling Land Cruiser that recently sailed to our shores.

The Toyota Cruiser EV Compact has now won the 2022 Car Design Award for Concept Vehicle in Milan, Italy, prompting Toyota to release more images of the off-road-focused, retro-style SUV.

Toyota was still tight-lipped about the technical details of the compact cruiser EV. However, it is expected to be based on an electric version of the Toyota TNGA platform that underpins the larger bZ4x SUV.

In the production specification, it is expected to have a dual-motor set-up with all-wheel-drive as standard. While this may be an idea for now, the Toyota Compact Cruiser EV is likely to enter production sometime in the coming years. When launched, the compact cruiser EV could be the electric competitor of the Ford Bronco Sport and the next generation Jeep Renegade in the international market.Toyota Cruiser

The compact cruiser EV is built by Toyota Europe Design Development Center in Nice, France. Note that the SUV concept is not yet in the flesh, and the life-size prototype depicted here is only a static clay model, evident by the dark aura of the windows.

In terms of its design, the compact cruiser EV obviously draws inspiration from the first generation of the Toyota Legend Land Cruiser model, as well as reminiscent of the 2006 FJ Cruiser.

On the front, retro themed front, the Compact Cruiser EV has a grille with Toyota lettering attached to the center by horizontally arranged LED headlights, giving it a J80 Land Cruiser-style face. Then there’s the huge front bumper with a large silver skid plate and extended, squared-off wheel arch that clearly announces its off-road intent. The bonnet, meanwhile, is flat and features a wide, central air scoop.

In profile, the ones that stand out the most are the heavy body cladding and the prominent kink in the window line. The contrasting colors of C-pillars and black-out A-pillars also give the roof a floating effect. Meanwhile, side-mounted ladders and basepack roof racks add to the roughness of the car. The retro-styled wheels of all-terrain tires are a great touch.

On the back, the Compact Cruiser EV Squaresh LED tail-light, Toyota lettering on the tailgate and, in particular, an extension of the roof rack inside the tailgate. Just like the front, the rear bumper is similarly heavy and has a prominent silver skid plate.
