Tata may target the affordable EV segment with the Tiago EV – it will be the new entry point in Tata’s EV portfolio. Some reports also suggest that it could be the most affordable EV in the country, but we will know for sure after the official launch of the electric vehicle, which is expected to happen later this month.

Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director, Passenger Vehicles Division, Tata Motors said, “Today is a momentous occasion for us as we announce the expansion of our EV portfolio with a new mainstream intervention from the stable of Tata Motors, the Tiago EV.”
The Tiago EV will be based on the Tiago ICE hatchback, which is currently available in two fuel variants – petrol and CNG. The car was initially launched in 2018 and is currently available in 14 different trims.

The past two years have witnessed growing adoption of electric vehicles – rising fuel prices and awareness of EVs have helped boost EV sales across the country.

The Tata Tiago EV is rumored to be powered by a 41hp electric motor, which we’ve already seen in the Xpress-T EV. It is said to be backed by a 16.5kWh battery pack that could deliver a 165km range. Some rumors also suggest that we could see a 21.5kWh variant with a 213km range.
Rumors also suggest that the Tiago EV could borrow the Ziptron powertrain and split battery pack design from the Tigor EV.

Tiago EV Price :

The Tiago EV, when launched, will be the fourth electric car in Tata’s portfolio, which already includes the Xpress-T EV, Tigor EV, and the Nexon EV range. The Xpress-T EV is the most affordable of the lot, with a starting price of ₹9.75 lakh (ex-showroom).

Tiago EV launch Date :

Tata Motors Tiago EV launch announcement coincides with World EV Day which is observed on September 9. Behind just two models – Nexon EV and Tigor EV – Tata Motors has captured 88% of the electric passenger vehicle market.

Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility said, “We are proud to lead the EV market in India. As an early entrant, we shaped the market and saw it grow with Nexon EV and Tigor EV. We have over 40,000 Tata EVs on the road and we are grateful to the early adopters who have faith in the brand.”

Tata Motors sold 17,150 electric vehicles between April and August. The company is targeting sales of 50,000 EVs this financial year with a significant increase in production capacity.

“Earlier this year, we unveiled our three-phase approach to building a comprehensive EV portfolio. We are committed to launching 10 EVs across different product segments, body styles, and affordability levels,” added Chandra.

The all-electric version of the Tiago was first showcased by the Tata Motors European Technical Center in 2017. This model uses a liquid-cooled 85 kW motor that produces 20Nm of torque and a driving range of 100 km on a single charge. With significant improvements in EV technology since then, the Tiago EV is expected to sport better specifications.

Tata Motors has invested Rs 15,000 crore in the EV space over the next five years and will use the funds to electrify some of its existing products, introduce electric versions of new products and launch ‘born electric’ models.

Recently, the company agreed to buy Ford Motor’s plant in Gujarat to use it to manufacture EVs. The initial annual capacity of that plant will be 300,000 units per annum.
