If you’re looking for a mainstream hybrid that takes things to the next level, you’ll want to check out the 2022 Toyota RAV4 PRIME. This is a plug-in hybrid version of Toyota’s popular crossover that went through a new design in 2019.
This is PRIME’s second model year and I am equally impressed with its performance at this time. (I also reviewed the 2021 model which you can check out here.) My review model this week is the top-of-the-line XSE with all-wheel drive, the slot above the SE trim.

Toyota RAV4 Prime :
Toyota RAV4 Prime is a good SUV. It has an energetic powertrain, average power range for plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and good fuel economy rating. It has comfortable, spacious seats and a smooth ride. The technology is not as modern as some competitors, but it is easy to use.
Should I buy a Toyota RAV4 Prime?
The RAV4 Prime is worth a look, but you’ll want to do your best before buying one. This is because, although it is a good small crossover, the hybrid SUV class has plenty of tempting options and several of them cost less than this Toyota. That said, if you look at a few options and like the RAV4 Prime the best, you shouldn’t sweat to buy it because it’s a good go.

Toyota RAV4 Prime Design :
I must say that PRIME has a black roof and the gorgeous supersonic red attached to its 19-inch wheels looks attractive. The front has a silver-painted lower bumper and a unique, slim black-diamond bar front grille. A vertical LED accent strip tells you that it is prime. It is equipped with LED daytime running lights and the adaptive front headlight system of this model upgrades optional and standard bi-LED headlamps.
Black painted power side mirrors are folded and heated. On the back, you’ll find dual chrome exhaust as well as LED tail lamps. Above, a low profile roof rack sports optional cross rail bar. The blue on the front and back indicate the hybrid status of the Toyota logo.
Toyota RAV4 Prime Interior :
The XSE’s black interior is well-designed, comfortable and user-friendly. Soft-touch surfaces decorate dashes, doors, and armrests with plastic in some places. A premium package includes unique black, comfortable SofTex leather seat and 8-way power adjustable driver’s seat with side bolster and memory with red accents as well as a 4-way power passenger seat and heated and ventilated front seats. An optional panoramic sunroof allows plenty of light to enter from above.
A 7-inch digital driver display with blue / green theme offers unique things for hybrids like standard driver information and EV / HV range and EV drive ratio. I don’t find the text to be short for me. It sits between two analog dials.
The center stack is a dual-zone climate control habitat with large, easily gripped rubber dials. The center console hosts your leather-trimmed gear shift knob, electric parking brake, automatic brake hold and select drive mode.
The RAV4 is spacious with lots of head- and foot chambers. The 60/40 rear split seats are slightly raised due to the battery. A drop-down center provides armrest cupholders. Back seat passengers also get air vents. An optional kick sensor height-adjustable power liftgate works fast. Slightly smaller than the standard RAV4 but with plenty of trunk space. A cargo cover hides your valuables.
Toyota RAV4 Prime Features :
The PRIMEe comes with a standard 9-inch touchscreen surrounded by glossy black that is responsive and easy to navigate with the pinch and zoom capabilities. The system is compatible with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Amazon Alexa. Voice commands also work great. I’d like to see a high resolution backup camera. An optional premium audio package adds dynamic navigation, an 11-speaker JBL sound system and a bird-eye view camera. Wireless charging is standard and comes with PRIME 5 USB ports.
Toyota RAV4 Prime Range :
PRIME is the most powerful and fastest RAV4 with the fastest 0 to 60 times (5.7 seconds) in the lineup behind Supra. It shares its 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine with the regular hybrid. But with a more powerful motor-generator, including the recently developed high-power lithium-ion battery and a booster converter, it delivers a combined 302-horsepower that is an 83-horsepower boost compared to the standard hybrid. (It’s more powerful than the newly unveiled 300-horsepower GR Corolla.)
Drive mode includes Sport, Echo and Normal mode, EV mode, HV mode, Auto EV / AV mode, Charge mode and Trail mode.
PRIME offers a fully charged 42-mile electric driving range, the best EV range in the plug-in hybrid class.
Toyota RAV4 Prime Charging :
Using a standard 3.3kW on-board charger, PRIME takes 12 hours to charge using a 120-volt level 1 charging from a home outlet. Using an optional 6.6 kW advanced on-board charger with Level 2 charging (240v) reduces charging time by 2.5 hours.
2022-toyota-rav-4-prime-charging-carprousa-png Charging at the port next to the passenger is simply locked and the green light indicates that charging is ongoing. Charging information is displayed on the driver display screen. To disconnect the wires make sure the car is unlocked.

Toyota RAV4 Prime Price :
An optional premium package (3,350) includes Toyota Razor-Sharp digital rearview mirror, 10-inch head-up display, 6.6 kW on-board charger, panoramic sunroof, LED adaptive front lighting system, kick sensor, kick sensor Trimmed power front seat, 120V / 1500W AC adapter, bird-eye view camera, and front and rear parking with automatic braking.
An optional premium audio package (1,620) includes a 9-inch multimedia screen with dynamic navigation with an 11-speaker JBL sound system. The Weather package ($ 375) adds heated leather-trimmed steering wheel and rain sensing wiper with a D-Iser function.
Other extras: roof rack cross bar ($ 315), mudguard ($ 129), cargo mat / carpet floor mat ($ 269), rear bumper applique ($ 69) and wheel lock ($ 65).
Add to that the price of a sticker for this XSE loaded model and above $ 51,000, making it even more expensive than the similarly decorated 2021 PRIME that I reviewed last year at RP 49,776.
Toyota RAV4 Prime Security :
Standard Safety Sense (TSS 2.0) includes pre-collision with pedestrian detection, lane exit warning with full-speed range dynamic radar cruise control and steering assist. PRIME comes with standard blind spot monitor and rear cross traffic. Front and rear parking assistance with automated braking is part of an optional premium package.
RAV4 Prime crash test results :
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the 2022 Toyota RAV4 Prime the best rating of Good in three crash tests.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has not tested the 2022 RAV4 Prime.

Toyota covers the RAV4 Prime with a three-year/36,000-mile basic warranty and a five-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty. Certain hybrid components are covered by an eight-year/100,000-mile warranty, and the battery comes with a 10-year/150,000-mile warranty.
